(1) (1771) French anatomist and pathologist Marie François Xavier Bichat was born. He is known as the Father of Histology, and he distinguished 21 types of elementary tissues although he worked without a microscope.

(2) (1776) French physician and botanist Henri Dutrochet was born. He is known for discovering the process of osmosis, and for his research on respiration, embryosis, and the effect of light on plants.

(3) 1967 – American physicist Theodore Maiman is given a patent for his ruby laser systems, the world’s first laser.
