(1) (1716) German naturalist and physician Engelbert Kaempfer passes away. He wrote Amoenitatum Exoticarum, a book about his travels that also was the first extensive description of Japanese plants.
(2) (1799) American physician and surgeon John Light Atlee is born. He was one of the organizers of the American Medical Association and also served as its president.
(3) (1905) Swiss anatomist, physiologist, and histologist Albert von Kölliker passed away. Among his work on vertebrates and embryos, he also studied muscles, determining that smooth muscles were made up of distinct units of nucleated muscle cells.
