(1) (1780) Scottish physician and philosopher John Abercrombie is born. He published many papers on neuropathology, diseases of the brain, spinal cord and liver, and also on religion.
(2) (1861) Norwegian explorer, scientist and diplomat Fridtjof Nansen is born. As a curator for the Bergen Museum, his research focused on the central nervous system of lower marine animals.
(3) (1946) Poet, novelist, retired medical physician and clinical neuroscientist Raymond Tallis is born. He was also the Vice-Chairman of the Stroke Task Force of the Advisory Group that was developing the National Service Framework for Older People.
