(1811) Scottish obstetrician James Young Simpson is born. He was very interested in the use of anesthesia for pregnancy and he also discovered the anesthetic properties of chloroform.

(1896) American physicist and chemist Robert S. Mulliken is born. He is responsible for the early development of the molecular orbital theory, a theory which is used to compute the structure of molecules.

(1909) American obstetrical anesthesiologist Virginia Apgar is born. She is known for inventing the Apgar score, a way to quickly assess the health of newborns.
