(1865) American entomologist Charles W. Woodworth is born. He is remembered for his work with the model organism Drosophila, and also for his work with mosquitoes and mosquito control.

(1858) German physiologist, comparative anatomist, ichthyologist, and herpetologist Johannes Peter Müller passes away. He was known for increasing the understanding of speech and hearing, and of the properties of blood and lymph.

(1999) American physicist Arthur Leonard Schawlow passes away. In 1981, he shared the Nobel Prize for Physics, for his work with lasers.
