(1755) German physician Samuel Hahnemann is born. He is best known for creating the medical system of homeopathy, an alternative form of medicine.

(1887) Argentine physiologist Bernardo Houssay is born. He shared the 1947 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine for his discovery of the role of pituitary hormones in the regulation of blood sugar.

(1900) American chemist, inventor, investor, and philanthropist Arnold Orville Beckman is born. He is known for a number of his inventions, including the pH meter – a device which measures acidity.
