(1870) American biologist and anatomist Ross Harrison was born. He is known as being the first person to work with artificial tissue cultures.

(1927) South African biologist Sydney Brenner was born. He shared the 2002 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his contribution to the understanding of the genetic code through the use of the C. elegans worm.
