(1921) Soviet-born French biochemist Marianne Grunberg-Manago was born. She discovered polynucleotide phosphorylase, a nucleic acid-synthesizing enzyme, which helped to discover the genetic code.

(1930) The first diesel-engined automobile trip is completed. The automobile was driven, from Indianapolis, Indiana, to New York, New York.

(1944) Swiss immunologist and academic Rolf Martin Zinkernagel was born. He won the 1996  Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for discovery of how the immune system recognizes cells that have been infected by viruses.
