(1913) Turkish-American chemist, businessman, and philanthropist Nejat Eczacıbaşı is born. He founded Turkey’s first modern pharmaceutical plant.

(1493) American botanist and inventor George Washington Carver passes away. He focused on the promotion of alternative crops to cotton, such as peanuts and sweet potatoes, in order to restore the soil’s nitrogen.

(2004) English biologist and chemist Norman Heatley passes away. He was part of the team that developed the antibiotic penicillin for treating bacterial infections like Streptococci and Staphylococci bacteria.
